Spinel refers to both a mineral and a group of minerals that are oxides of metals and share a common crystal structure. They usually form hard glassy octahedra and implanted twins. It is found in mafic igneous rocks, in aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks and in limestones with contact metamorphism.
